Every night, as many as 5,000 people in Washoe County have no place to call home. Approximately one-third are families with children.

A minimum wage worker would have to work more than 70 hours a week, 52 weeks per year, just to keep a family of four above the poverty line.

In June 2001, Family Promise of Reno/Sparks began operation as the Interfaith Hospitality Nework (IHN) of the Truckee Meadows and opened its doors to serve homeless families in Washoe County. The Washoe County program, based on a model first implemented by Karen Olsen in Union County, New Jersey, is one of 140 successful networks in 38 states nation-wide.

Since first opening its doors to assist homeless families in their transition into permanent housing, Family Promise of Reno/Sparks has served more than 114 families including over 244 children.

During 2007 Family Promise of Reno/Sparks served 25 families, 90% of those families left for a permanent housing situation. Nationwide over 3,100 families were served by Family Promise affiliates, with an average of 60% of families achieving permanent housing.
